The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has issued an urgent warning after identifying four new locations in Kingsville and Leamington where individuals may have been exposed to the highly contagious measles virus.
Two of these locations are situated in Leamington.
The first exposure occurred at Queen Elizabeth Elementary School on March 21, where anyone present between 9:15 a.m. and 5:35 p.m. is advised to monitor for symptoms. A follow-up exposure was also noted at the same school on March 25, from 9:15 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Additionally, Erie Shores Healthcare has been flagged for potential measles exposure. Those who visited the waiting room and patient assessment rooms there on March 26, between 12 p.m. and 6:35 p.m., should also be vigilant for any signs of illness.
In Kingsville, the TMC Kingsville Walk-In Clinic saw exposure on March 26, between 11 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. Furthermore, the Essex County Nurse Practitioner Lead Clinic's waiting area was highlighted for exposure during the same hours on that day.
If you or someone you know is unvaccinated, born after 1970, or has not received two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine, it is critical to isolate and watch for symptoms. These can include high fever, cough, runny nose, and a distinctive rash.
Measles is not just a mild childhood illness; it can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis, and even death, especially in unvaccinated populations. Health authorities strongly encourage vaccination as a protective measure against this virus.
