The Big Question: Do You Want Independence?

At a recent press conference, Jeffrey Rath, a lawyer with the APP, dramatically unveiled the referendum question: "Do you agree that the province shall become a sovereign country and cease to be a province of Canada?" Rath emphasized that this question is straightforward and direct, unlike previous, more ambiguous queries posed in Quebec's 1995 referendum.

Legislative Changes Set the Stage

The separatist dialogue has resurfaced since Premier Smith introduced legislation aimed at lowering the required signatures for a referendum petition. If this bill passes, it will streamline the process significantly, giving separatists hope to mobilize enough support.

Rallying Support for Independence

Since the last federal election, the APP has experienced a surge in membership, with CEO Mitch Sylvestre reporting 220,000 pledges—only 177,000 short of their target for registered supporters. Sylvestre aims for a total of 600,000 pledges not just to secure a referendum, but to win it outright.

An Educational Campaign Across Alberta

Kickstarting their ambitious campaign, the APP has planned a series of 50 town halls to educate Albertans about sovereignty. Rath stated, "We intend to knock on every door at least twice," aiming to inform and invigorate public support for independence.

Leaders within the group, including former heart surgeon Dennis Modry and ex-Conservative MP LaVar Payne, painted a compelling vision of an independent Alberta, free from federal regulations, with reduced provincial taxes and no federal obligations.
