Measles Outbreak Hits Southern Alberta
As measles cases emerge in southern Alberta, health officials are sounding the alarm! The Alberta Health Services (AHS) has identified several locations where individuals may have been exposed to the highly contagious virus.
Locations and Exposure Times
If you were at these hotspots during the specified times, you could be at risk: - **Shoppers Drug Mart**, Taber: May 5, from 9:25 PM to 11:50 PM - **Lethbridge Polytechnic**, Lethbridge: May 3, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM - **Walmart Supercentre**, Pincher Creek: May 8, 9, 12, 13, all days from 8 AM to 8 PM - **Zum’s Eatery & Mercantile**, Waterton Park: May 10, from 5 PM to 9:30 PM and also on the same day from 12 PM to 5 PM
Who is at Risk?
AHS warns that anyone born in or after 1970 who hasn’t received two doses of the measles vaccine could be susceptible to the virus. If you fall into this category, it’s crucial to monitor for symptoms of measles and check your immunization records ASAP!
The Importance of Vaccination
The measles vaccine is a powerful defense against the infection and its severe complications. In Alberta, getting vaccinated is a breeze and completely free through the public immunization program. AHS recommends that children receive two doses: the first at one year old and the second at 18 months.
Additional Immunization Opportunities
With active cases reported in Medicine Hat, those living or traveling in the vicinity are encouraged to get immunized. Infants aged 6 to 11 months should also receive an early dose of the vaccine but must still complete the routine series after they turn one.
What to Do If You Haven't Been Vaccinated
Born before 1970 and not yet vaccinated? AHS advises you to consult your healthcare provider about the possibility of receiving a single dose of the measles vaccine.
Stay safe and protect yourself and your community by getting vaccinated. Don’t let measles make a comeback!
