Get Ready, Alberta! Wild Weather Hits the Prairies

Rain, snow, and thunderstorms are set to shake things up across Alberta and Saskatchewan this week. After a perilous start to wildfire season, the much-needed rain is finally making its presence felt.

Snowfall Warnings and Travel Alerts Issued

As conditions shift dramatically, Alberta's Rockies have issued May snowfall warnings. Drivers are advised to stay vigilant as rapidly changing travel conditions could lead to dangerous situations. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) urges motorists to turn on their lights and maintain safe distances if visibility drops.

Heavy Snowfall Expected in Higher Elevations

In higher elevations, especially near Kananaskis and along Highway 93, travelers will face heavy, wet snow this Monday. The most significant accumulation is expected above 1600 meters. By Tuesday morning, the stunning white-capped mountains will be visible as freezing levels dip below 1800 meters.

Severe Thunderstorm Alerts Across Southern Alberta and Saskatchewan

Starting early Monday, severe thunderstorm warnings cover southern Alberta and Saskatchewan. A storm is circling central and southern Alberta, bringing consistent rainfall, particularly west of the QE2. Rainfall amounts are expected to range from 20 to 30 mm in Calgary, with localized totals possibly reaching 50 mm.

More Storms on the Horizon—Wednesday Looks Wet!

The weather pattern isn't letting up. On Wednesday, expect an influx of rain showers and embedded thunderstorms as a new storm moves down from the north, spanning from Fort McMurray to the southern foothills.

Calgary’s Rainfall Needs a Boost!

So far this May, Calgary airport has recorded no rainfall, and typically, May ranks as the third rainiest month in the region. This week looks promising for catching up on lost precipitation, as the storms are expected to provide significant amounts of moisture.
