Modus Operandi

According to the York Regional Police (YRP), the modus operandi of the suspects involves deliberately causing minor accidents. After rear-ending a vehicle, they wait for the unsuspecting driver to exit their car to assess the damage. In a shocking twist, the suspects—who are often armed—then confront the victim and hijack their vehicle.

Recent Incidents

The disturbing trend has already led to several incidents. On November 3, 2024, in Markham, authorities responded to a carjacking that transpired when a suspect’s Honda sedan collided with a victim’s vehicle at approximately 7 p.m. As the startled victim stepped out to examine the damage, he was met by two armed suspects, who subsequently stole his Lexus.

Just weeks later, on November 20, another staged carjacking unfolded in the area of Kirkham Drive and Karachi Drive. This time, a male suspect on a bicycle strayed into the side of a Cadillac Escalade. When the victim exited to help, two more suspects emerged from a dark sedan, threatened the victim with a firearm, and made off with the vehicle.

Fast forward to January 2025, and the troubling pattern continued. On January 9, officers were called to the Vaughan area when a female driver was lightly rear-ended. Upon getting out to check her Cadillac Escalade, she was immediately confronted by two armed individuals. However, due to a kill switch installed in her vehicle, the would-be thieves were foiled.

A more recent incident occurred on January 17, 2025, in Richmond Hill. In this case, a dark SUV struck a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon. As the victim exited their vehicle, a suspect seized the opportunity, jumped into the SUV, and fled the scene.

Miraculously, there have been no reported physical injuries stemming from these tense confrontations. However, local police are urging the community to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings. They recommend trusting one's instincts and taking immediate action if something feels amiss.

"Drive to a police station or call the authorities if you believe you are being followed," a police spokesperson advised. "In the event of a collision, if you feel uncomfortable, don't hesitate to dial 911. If you do find yourself a victim of a carjacking, prioritize your safety and do your best to be a reliable witness."
