Hoffman expresses that this exacerbating situation is not entirely unexpected given the ongoing healthcare challenges.

Lethbridge: The Epicenter of Outbreaks

Highlighting Lethbridge’s alarming health crisis, Hoffman notes that nearly half of the residents lack a family doctor. "This is particularly concerning as southern Alberta grapples with significant outbreaks Martin," she stated. She urges those without regular healthcare access to utilize the 811 service, where they can check their vaccination status and receive guidance on obtaining the necessary vaccines.

The Importance of Vaccination in Times of Outbreak

Acknowledging the busy lives of individuals, Hoffman emphasizes the critical need for immunization, especially during outbreaks. "I understand life can get in the way, but missing vaccinations can have severe consequences," she warned. She also noted that many parents might be unaware or have faced challenges in scheduling vaccinations for their children.

Addressing Vaccine Hesitancy

Hoffman encourages those with doubts about the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine to consult their healthcare providers or call 811 for more information. Drawing from her personal experience, she revealed that she received her booster shot just a few years ago and now feels a sense of security.

Time to Act: Reviving Canada's Measles Eradication Efforts

Over a year prior, former chief medical officer Dr. Mark Joffe raised concerns about the rising measles threat, but it wasn't until recently that the province took action by launching a vaccination campaign. Hoffman recalls a time when Canada eliminated measles during the 1990s and asserts that this is achievable again, provided that everyone participates actively.

A Call to Public Action

"I sincerely hope people will reach out to public health services and get vaccinated," Hoffman stated passionately. "If we were able to eradicate measles in the 90s, it’s absolutely possible to do so once more, but we need to be deliberate and proactive in our approach."
