Growing Concern Over Measles Outbreak

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is sounding the alarm with 69 confirmed cases of measles since the outbreak began in February. A staggering number of these cases are concentrated in Kingsville and Leamington, raising serious concerns for the entire region.

Health Officials Warn of Unvaccinated Population

According to Medical Officer of Health Dr. Mehdi Aloosh, the high number of cases in Leamington and Kingsville highlights alarming vaccination rates in these areas. "I'm deeply concerned that this outbreak could spread to other communities if immediate action is not taken," he stated.

Unreported Cases Likely to Worsen Situation

Dr. Aloosh suspects that many more unreported cases exist, with several confirmed incidents being so severe that they required hospitalization. "Windsor-Essex has seen serious cases recently, mirroring hospital admissions across the province," he noted. This is a critical moment for public health.

Children at High Risk: 32% of Cases in Schools

Notably, 32% of the documented cases involve school-aged children. In response, health officials are enforcing strict protocols: any student who has been exposed to a confirmed case and has not received the requisite two doses of the MMR vaccine will be barred from school for up to three weeks.

Vaccination is Key: MMR Vaccine Highly Effective

To combat this outbreak, the Health Unit emphasizes the importance of vaccination. The Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine is 97% effective after two doses, making it the best shield against serious illness.
