A remarkable figure who shaped the landscape of dentistry, business, and community leadership in Newfoundland has left us. Dr. Hilary Rodrigues, aged 82, passed away last week, leaving a legacy that touched the lives of many.

Originally hailing from Tanzania and educated in London, Dr. Rodrigues set up his dental practice in Whitbourne during the vibrant 1970s. His entrepreneurial spirit saw him expand into the pharmaceutical field, offering even more to the community.

Alongside his wife, Marie-France, Dr. Rodrigues had a vision for the province's natural resources. In 1993, they launched Newfoundland and Labrador's first winery at the historic Markland Cottage Hospital. Rodrigues Winery not only became a beloved locale for tourists, but its wines were also shipped globally. Remarkably, he even created a line of certified Kosher wines, showcasing local ingredients.

A dedicated civic leader, he served as the mayor of Whitbourne and chaired the regional Community Futures organization. His passion extended beyond traditional dentistry; he was also an advocate for nutraceutical development, particularly focusing on the health benefits of sea buckthorn.

A life-altering stroke in 2020 may have ended his dental practice, but Dr. Rodrigues remained devoted to serving others. He selflessly volunteered his dental expertise at The Gathering Place, ensuring that those in need had access to care.

Dr. Hilary Rodrigues is survived by his loving wife, children, and grandchildren—his remarkable contributions to the community and countless lives will not be forgotten.
