A Cosmic Surprise: Meteorite Crashes into Prince Edward Island Home!

It was an otherwise tranquil July morning in Prince Edward Island when a surprise from outer space shattered the calm. In an astonishing turn of events, a meteorite struck just outside a home in Charlottetown, narrowly missing one of the homeowners who was standing in that exact spot just two minutes prior.

The celestial visitor left behind a smoldering divot measuring two centimeters—an unexpected memento of its extraterrestrial journey. Alarmed yet intrigued, the homeowners reached out to experts located an astounding 4,700 kilometers away at the University of Alberta for confirmation of what had just occurred on their front lawn.

Adding a twist of fate, Chris Herd, a renowned professor from the University of Alberta, was already planning a family vacation to PEI. Seizing the opportunity, he visited the scene to conduct an investigation firsthand.

“I found myself standing in the homeowner’s kitchen, using their kitchen scale to weigh the materials collected from the site,” Herd reminisced about the peculiar experience. After bringing fragments back to his laboratory in Alberta, he confirmed that the object was indeed a meteorite. Dubbed the Charlottetown Meteorite, it has been classified by scientists as an ordinary chondrite.

Remarkably, this meteorite holds the distinction of being the first recorded meteorite from Prince Edward Island and the entire Maritime region. Herd speculates that the meteorite likely originated from the asteroid belt located between Mars and Jupiter, having traveled light years with the precise speed and trajectory to reach PEI.

Curiously, Herd noted that meteorites often contain elements that are naturally found on Earth. This particular specimen is rich in nickel and iron. “It’s just pulverized,” Herd explained. “One flake in the middle still shows the fusion crust, which would have been on the very outside of the rock.”
